‘But can I afford to move back home?”

It’s the kind of question that comes up frequently when I talk with others about my hopes and plans for the future.

A future in Hawaii — with my family, the ocean and the mountains, opportunities to live and breathe the culture — is picture perfect. (Especially in comparison to the cold and gray winter months in Utah.) I feel a deep kuleana to care for the aina and the lahui, to make my ancestors proud by giving back to the place that shaped so much of my identity. Yet when I really think about what it would mean to settle in Hawaii, the cons list often seems longer than the pros list.
