The COVID-19 pandemic has redefined what learning means for our keiki, educators and parents.

Nonprofit HawaiiKidsCAN is among the groups on the forefront of supporting and uplifting our keiki during these difficult times. Executive Director David Miyashiro joined Good Morning Hawaii to talk about Hawaii Education Exploration Week, which promotes diverse paths to learning, and bridging the digital divide, which has been highlighted by issues raised by full-time distance learning.

HawaiiKidsCAN is supporting two priority bills this session. Both were intentionally designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for a future-oriented, diversified economy for our keiki. This is in partnership with the digital equity work HawaiiKidsCAN has been promoting since the pandemic started.

  • Improve access to computer science education for all keiki (HB1222/SB242).
  • Ensure students are “ready to work in Hawaii,” especially in future-oriented fields. (HB1223/SB516).
