HONOLULU (Island News) – As the deadline for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is soon approaching on June 30 and with one of the biggest drops in FAFSA completion in the country, a local nonprofit is urging Hawaii students to complete applications and apply for financial aid.

Last year Hawaii students left $12 million in financial aid grants left unclaimed and with a 20% drop in FAFSA completion this year, which is one of the biggest drops in the country, officials report that it’s likely that even more money will be available.

“A lot of students and families don’t realize that they could virtually go to college or trade school for free. Between grants, which don’t require repayment, and scholarship programs like Hawaii Promise, there are ways to cover the expenses of post-secondary education without going into debt. But in order to qualify for this kind of free money, students and families need to complete the FAFSA,” said David Sun-Miyashiro, Executive Director of HawaiiKidsCAN and HawaiiKidsCAN Afford College.
