Lanai Ohana Pods Parent Fellowship

Field Team

Four positions

Scope of responsibilities (per person):

• • Engage parents to become more involved in advocating for their children’s education.
  • Help participating parents to contribute to a shared knowledge bank of resources, testimonials, contacts and suggestions. This knowledge bank will be shared with all members of LEON as a way to encourage mutual support and connection.
  • Help Lanai parents access supplemental learning support, such as:
    • Participating in Ohana Pods
    • Participating in a parent support group
    • Receiving guidance on how to find the best educational fit for their child, including virtual options and homeschooling
    • Accessing quality tutoring services virtually and in person
    • Utilizing technology to access assessments and advanced distance learning courses
  • Help parents take at least one advocacy action in support of better opportunities for students, including:
    • Speaking to local media outlets or posting on social media channels about the need for high quality educational opportunities
    • Meeting with or contacting local elected officials, including members of the legislature and Board of Education
    • Meeting with school administration to share their concerns
    • Organizing other parents to take advocacy actions

Key skills, abilities, and experience:

• • Passion for education advocacy and student-centric education.
  • Positive can-do attitude and commitment to HawaiiKidsCAN’s mission.
  • Interest and comfort with networking and building relationships.
  • Highly organized and strong communicator.
  • Experience working for or volunteering with community organizations, non-profits, and schools is a plus.

Important notes:

• • This fellowship includes a stipend of $150 a month, which will be distributed upon completion of the program requirements.
  • The commitment is a maximum of 10 hours per week.
  • The fellowship will run through September 2023, with possible extensions granted with HawaiiKidsCAN approval.

Requirements of the program:

• • Must be a parent, grandparent, or guardian of a child on Lanai in the Pre-K through high school age range. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Site Leader

Two positions (Positions have been filled)

Scope of responsibilities (per person):

• • Recruit and support a core group of local parents to engage on local education issues in the Lanai community.
  • Work with Executive Director to create event and engagement strategy and schedule.
  • Attend local community meetings (i.e. School Community Council meetings or townhalls) around education to gain familiarity around community support and needs.
  • Manage at least two field team members, including helping them set up engagement and recruitment targets.
  • Serve as an on-island representative for LEON and the Ohana Pods program.
  • Help at least six parent leaders to build, lead and maintain Ohana Pods across the island. These leaders will receive leadership development training, resources and guidance throughout the project, resulting in a stronger, more efficient network across the island.

  • Experience working for or volunteering with community organizations, non-profits, and schools is a plus.

  • The fellowship will run through September 2023, with possible extensions granted with HawaiiKidsCAN approval.
